quix·ot·ic com·ics

What is launching small-press comics but impractical? What is any grassroots artistic effort but extravagantly romantic? What are dragons hidden in human society and chimpanzees in Victorian-era time machines if they aren’t fanciful, fantastic, and imaginary?

We decided to forego attempting to be among the first companies noticed in Previews with an alphabetically superior name for our endeavor, and instead chose a name that said “this is what we are and this is what we do. .”

We tilt at windmills and create comics about people that do the same.

What is Quixotic Comics?

Quixotic Comics was formed when Justin walked into a comic store and struck up a conversation with the guy sketching behind the counter, Matt. This led to a brief collaboration at David World Press and a commitment to producing comics together. When DWP died an early (but timely) death, we were free to work on our own projects, to try to really break into the industry.

Breaking into comics is like breaking into Hollywood. You break in through either Door #1 (You’re incredibly lucky) or Door #2 (An agonizingly slow process involving lots of rejection letters and lots of overburdened editors at conventions trying their best to find exactly what they’re looking for at a glance…and noticing quickly that you’re not it, at least not yet. And that’s if you’re good at what you do.).

Well, we choose Door #3, the way of Kevin Smith and Brian Michael Bendis, the way of Robert Rodriguez and Dave Sim. We’re doing it ourselves, we’re walking the walk. We’re writing and penciling and inking and coloring and lettering. We’re making comics, and we’re letting our comics break in for us.

In a perfect world, Quixotic Comics will be an imprint or a studio rather than a publishing company. We have set out to be creators more than we have publishers. But if we must become the latter in order to become the former, so be it. If established publishing companies won’t put our books on the market, we will. Quixotic Comics will.

Quixotic Comics is us refusing to take no for an answer.
